Queen’s dresser reveals she cleans her diamonds with this unusual treatment

In her recently published book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, the Queen’s personal dresser has revealed the unusual cleaning product she uses when tending to her Majesty’s diamonds. And the method has certainly proved its worth as Angela Kelly has been dresser to the Queen since 1994. So, what’s her secret? Good old gin.

According to Angela, the key to getting great shine on the many diamonds housed within Buckingham Palace is, “A little gin and water,” though she hastens to add “just don’t tell the jeweller!”

This unusual application of one of the nation’s favourite tipples has been around for centuries, with many historic royals having been documented to leave their jewels soaking in gin overnight.

Fortunately for most of us, tarnished diamonds aren’t high on the agenda of things to worry about, but nonetheless it’s amusing to know the secret to a little shine is sitting in the cupboard.
